I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Occasionally I Hear

Occasionally,
I hear the cat door clunk
and the pad of a paw come through,
but when I look up to greet him
he’s already here beside me,
my old boy. So I know

our girl who left us
last September
now nine months ago
still comes back to visit,
invisible —
but I know what she looks like.

  2. Exactly. I love this poem.

In the morning, I come downstairs to feed her though she is many months gone. And I know I'll have more cats after this year's retreat is over--June to June--which is a long time to deprive myself of cat affection.

  3. This is really touching. I really like the way you set out the story, with the enjambed stanzas. There is a sense of continuity there.

  5. Can well imagine it Rosemary! The cuteness of a kitten lingers on after being long gone!
