I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Spiritual Explorer

She calls herself agnostic:
a word for one who thinks
there might be a God –
one who remains uncertain.

A word for one who thinks
might suit her well.
She does a lot of that. However ...

There might be a God?
She asserts there are far too many!
Beyond them, she discerns a Presence.

One who remains uncertain
might keep exploring as she does.
The finding, though, invalidates the label.

  3. I would call her a searcher.....or a seeker. Who knows what she may find!

  4. The finding, though, invalidates the label.... and yet seekers must seek, in their own way. Great rumination.

  5. Ooh. That's an interesting thought process. The uncertainty keeps the search on and the mind open. Well-penned. :-)

One can never be sure. It might even present some surprises!

  7. What a terrible world we live in when somebody somewhere in the world would happy to kill you for what you choose to believe. Where have we gone wrong?

  8. Your poem put me in mind of the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and most especially the quote; 'To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.'
A bit harsh on agnostics, perhaps, when life is full of doubts.

  12. Wonderful reflection. I believe we continue to discover more and more as we evolve and age. I have had my own journey with my spirituality that keeps me searching and searching for answers.

  13. There is indeed a presence as I have seen and felt the aura of this presence in my own life. Yet, there is sense of mystery in the universe.

  14. I have always been aware of the presence. Mystery and beauty ...the connection to the Divine. It's the poet's job to create the bridge.

  15. Evocative words, descriptive of man's never-ending search for the meaning of life.

  16. I've always felt that labels--especially when so vague--end up confusing things more often than not.

  17. There's a lot of joy to be had in exploration!

  18. Oh, mystery in the exploration is half the fun :-)

  19. One who remains uncertain
might keep exploring as she does.

There is a lot to be said for exploring. Though, as Thomas Aquinas wrote: “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.”

I loved the very clever - and thought provoking - close on this piece. An interesting "take" on the spiritual journey.

  20. We are all on a journey, to label ourselves might be premature,
