I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

The Garden Microcosm

pink blooms
fully open turn white
then brown

my cat twists
on her blanket –
mosquito

agile cat
captures baby lizard
loses it

old rose-bush
well-pruned doesn’t bloom
not a bud

Spring – new lives may be short lives
and some lives never begin

A haiku sonnet for Poetic Asides form challenge. I prefer short/long/short haiku lines to 5/7/5 syllables – but we were asked to make the final couplet lines of 7 syllables, so I did.

  5. Damn, girl. This is awesome!

P.S. Brown is often my favorite color.

P.P.S. My very favorite bush/tree ... the most fragrant, gorgeous thing I've ever smelled/seen --- well, I was idiot enough to prune it (not knowing a thing about plants), and it has never bloomed since. I have that special gift for destroying everything I touch. But no one ever taught how to grow things! :(

  11. Now I'm convinced that this is the only way of presenting a collection of haiku. They read so natural, in structure... and do an excellent job at illustrating the theme of the poem, in word and shape.

    Love it!

  13. A lovely bouquet of microcosms - we suspected pink might be a fleeting fancy - and if it wasn't offered I think even we would miss it

  14. Lovely 'blooms' here, Rosemary. Especially liked the agile cat. Made me smile...because the little lizard was (in the end) more agile! Never heard of this form, Rosemary. One to play with.

  17. Interesting form, I may have to try that when I have some time. The last two lines are so rich and deep, something a sage might say.

  20. Of the rose bush: It's always a sad occasion when a well-tended plant of any sort simply decides to die...

    1. It's alive, just not blooming. It's pretty old; I'm told this can happen when they age.
