I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Running, Barking

Footsteps. A child
runs down our street
briefly.
A dog barks.

I remember all that
time of my life
long ago, when
I thought it was all.

The boys running
to their play,
and our dogs. Me
trying to be wise.

I didn't know
how fast
it would all be gone –
and never gone.

Immersed
in the moment,
hoping
to do it right

I prayed
it would all turn out.
It didn't, of course.
And it did.

A boy is running
down our street,
the dog across the road
barks, wrenching my heart.

  1. I really like how you used the two contradictions in stanza 4&6... And how past and present mingles in the dog and the boy... Wonderful piece

  2. Gone and never gone - the passing of time is sobering isn't it - absorbed into us forever and much as we think we move on perhaps our 'elements' remain the same throughout..also can relate to the idea of sounds as memory triggers..it comes as a surprise at times doesn't it

  3. Life changes year after year, while still remaining the same... It might not change or remain the same for the same people at the same time, but it does...

Love the tone of this poem, the wisdom it illustrates...

  4. there are never 'wrong and right' and yes for us, always not satisfied, raising the
lath to new challenges...~ evocative and provoking in same time, just maybe to think we did what we could with what we had...all my thoughts, ~ thank you for sharing, best!

  5. Those were the days when relationships may just be budding! Carefree days of youth and without pressure or stress that afflicts adults.

  6. Wow, Rosemary, your poem blew me away! Indeed these experiences are gone and not yet gone...and yes it has passed WAY too fast. And though all didn't turn out, well...yes...it indeed did. Different than we thought perhaps, but it DID.

  7. I wonder if things ever turn out the way we imagine...sometimes there is a place in between. I think we just learn as we go along.

  8. Gone, but not gone. Then, but now. Love how the oppositions both remain true.
