I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

14, at Trevallyn

I always liked to go alone
on the path through the bush
down to the Gorge and the peacocks.
I would find a staff to help me over the stones.

On the path through the bush
there were many fallen branches
the right weight and length, firmness and give.

Down to the Gorge and the peacocks
the way was uneven and steep.
I swapped my skirts for pants.

I would find a staff to help me over the stones,
test the grip, and set out like a legendary explorer,
with no-one to see me as just a weak girl.

  7. Sometimes it is good to travel a path alone. A 'staff' is all the company one needs!

  8. I love the image of you with a staff, intrepid explorer. I used to ride my bike out into the country and then hike up into the hills - it is amazing I didnt encounter a rattlesnake, but once a herd of cows followed me because I was singing.........LOL.

Once you've set your mind nothing to stop you. Motivated by the outdoors is a bonus!

  14. Our goal makes us choose the right way to negotiate the path to it, Rosemary! As long as that goal is clear, one realises quickly that the rocky path demands stout shoes, comfortable and serviceable clothes and firm resolve. A helping staff never goes astray ;-)
