I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Upon a Time

Once,
I said –
once there was
a sweet summer,
long days all golden.
Oh, you don't believe me?
But I was there, I knew it.
I traipsed the wide green all those hours
indeed all those days, the blue above
deep and endless, in my sunny childhood.

They nodded indulgently – well, some did –
and turned away to their own pleasures.
Their summer was city buildings
and hot streets drifting with dust.
How could they hear my talk?
They wanted ice cream
and movie screens,
not my old,
distant
'once'.

At dVerse just now, we are writing etherees about summer.
I made it an exercise for myself to do it with all end-stopped lines.

The photo is of where I live now, not where I spent my childhood,
but it illustrates the kind of landscape well enough.

  1. Oh I can understand... But maybe icecream can be spiced with just a little once. Btw I corrected your link.

  2. I live for "once". Seems all the "once" teller around me are gone. A poignant piece, Rosemary!

  4. I missed those old green landscape days ~ Now that I live in the city, we take every opportunity to walk the wide green ~

  5. There is such a contrast between summer in a rural area and summer in the city. This made me think of one hot, humid summer I spent in the Bronx (New York) 1960's-- where the closest thing the kids could find to fun was opening the fire hydrants. And the air was heavy with the scent of the nearby Bronx Zoo--I will leave that to your imagination.

  6. I will take the green of the countryside any day. It's true that some don't appreciate it as much. I really liked the question "Oh you don't believe me?" embedded into your poem. It caught me off guard but made for an interesting read.

  7. Others stories of time gone by, to me are wonderful and interesting, sometimes in spite of (what might be) sad subject matter. We must all learn from history.
