I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Making Myself Feel Better

(I always liked to self-medicate, but ….)

Ginseng brought me out
in an allergic rash.

Though cigarettes calmed me down
and paradoxically sparked my brain,
there was that nasty cough.

Kale was tough
and tasted vile.

Though alcohol was a soother
reducing nerves and stress,
it got in the way of intelligent action.

Vitamin C
came out in my pee.

I’m still clinging to coffee.
It may be a poison, it may be addictive, but
I love my morning fix.

  1. There is something about coffee... it just makes us fight for it all the way until the bitter end.
