I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Sevenling (Relating)

David, Julie and Alesha moved closer
as the lovely lady read my aura.
‘Are you all family?’ she asked.

‘This is my son,’ I said, then hesitated.
‘I’m his partner,’ said Julie, ‘And this
is my child.’ I relaxed. Hooray, it's official!

The reader said, ‘Your aura is full of love.’

Poetic Asides April Poem A Day Challenge 2013, 7: Write a sevenling.
Submitted for dVerse Poetics: The anecdote (though this might be more a vignette).

  4. ...hi Rosemary... hmmmn... i find your take really good...very simple but kind of deceiving... the mere thought of its simplicity makes it more intriguing for me... especially the last line: 'your aura is full of love'... i don't know.. maybe it was just me...but that very line sounds sarcastic for me... the relations is more like a set up...something fabricated to silent the eyes of naughty community... 'are you all family?'--- oh my... why am i not convinced.... smiles... i have fun analizing this Rosemary... but pls feel free to hit me if i made it wrong... hihi... smiles... happy sunday!

    1. Hi Kelvin, glad you authorise it as an anecdote. However, you have got the intended meaning wrong. The hesitation I mention was because I wasn't quite sure how to explain to a stranger the relationships involved, as this was the first time my son brought his new family home to meet mother (it's a very long journey) and they're not actually living together yet, though planning to. I was relieved when she stepped in and defined the relationships clearly, and also glad to know they now publicly acknowledge themselves as 'partners'. All of which was hard to fit into seven lines! The aura reader meant what she said (and said a heck of a lot more than that!). My last line was meant to be a summing up and rounding off, and to imply what Brian inferred.

    3. Oh no, I think it is up to the writer. But anyway, your interpretation is valid on the amount of information in the poem.

    4. Maybe I could rewrite the phrase 'So it's official' to make things clearer. Thanks, Kelvin, your 'misinterpretation' is helpful!

    5. ...the change you made really redirects the mood to its intended meaning from the first impression i had in mind when i first read... how fun to have discussions like this between the writer & the reader... def a great learning experience for me... thanks again Rosemary... smiles...

    1. It's not in the poem, but she read an aura photo — and at great length, not using those exact words though she did mention love. (A bit of poetic licence there, to condense, and to be relevant in context.)

  6. Hesitating over the relationship description - good to have confirmation, and so I guess the "reading" was useful beyond the Barnum statements.

  7. I like the aura of love ~ Confirming relationships are a tricky business ~

  8. One of those fun moments when we ask someone to tell our future or read our palm...having one's aura read is usually a reassuring, positive experience...to have family there to enhance the reading is lovely.

  9. Loving indeed! Love is the tie that binds us all! I can feel all the tension released with the relaxation!
