I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Living on the Rim

How amazed I was when I read
a description of the ocean as green –
but that, I saw, was the Atlantic,
which I do not live beside.

The ocean, always, in my head
is the bluest blue you have ever seen –
deep blue, sparkling, sunny, romantic,
and vast, huge, gorgeously wide.

Never mind what others have said
about other seas where I have not been.
I’m drunk with love for the Pacific
and its thunder-crashing tide.

When I lived close, I’d lie in bed
paradoxically lulled in-between
the rhythmical roars – the volcanic
great ocean at my bedside.

Living on the edge, I am ecstatic
for this bluer beauty, this wilder side.

  1. Love the shades of ocean's color displayed here and the sweet contentment with what one lives. Lovely.

  2. For me, the Pacific Ocean is, always turquoise. Having sent several days, on it or at nearby beaches, as a child, while visiting family, in British Columbia. And no, I have no interest of ever going back, into boat of any type, for a cruise on the Pacific Ocean. Not a fan of roller coasters, thank you very much.

    1. I don't like swimming in surf, but I love boating in any conditions. Sadly, don't get to do much of it these days. The ocean is sometimes turquoise here too, in the shallows.

    2. The navy blue and turquoise of the Pacific and the Pacific islands and atolls , sadly destined to sink into the sea because of rising water levels are my love.Island life forever !

    1. Well, it's the deep blue beauty – occasionally highlighted with turquoise – that I love the best. (Smile.)

  5. I, too, love the wild, untamed beaches of the Pacific Northwest, so different from the tourist-congested calm beaches of the Atlantic. Your love comes through in every line.

    1. What a vast ocean it is! My beaches, of course, are on the east coast of Australia – similarly wild and untamed, and where I live scarcely populated.

  8. Bluer than blue, a champagne of blues--sounds like a wonderful place to be wild.
