I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

How Does the End of Love Sound?

The voice on the phone is light,
airy: ‘I’m happy now,’
shutting the recent dramas away,
saying, ‘I don’t ever want to
talk about that again’ –
‘that’ being the abusive man
so recently escaped from,
with police help. My voice
rises in response, sounds –
I realise belatedly – angry.

I hear, ‘I Googled what to do
when you lose your soul-mate.’
‘There isn’t just one,’ I exclaim,
‘and if there were, the chances
of meeting in this life are remote.’
Then, ‘I’m sorry I always
sound angry. I’m not
angry, just passionate.’
‘It’s all good,’ the young voice trills.
I wonder, how soon till next time?

A sightly different take on the dVerse prompt, The Sound of Love

  1. In a new age where bootie dancing
    has replaced slow dancing..
    and Love songs have died..
    mostly as such too..
    not sure if
    soul
    mates
    are what
    most folks are
    looking for anymore..
    perhaps selfies and lowering
the fertility rates is in order from Nature..
    to accommodate
    the stresses
    of over-population..
    yeah.. i tend to over
    tHinK over under thiNk..;)

  2. Oh the price some pay for those moments... Soul mate indeed, how do you ever make them listen?

  3. Slightly different, and yet a tale to be told. Reminded can be hidden by blinder of "love". Stay passionate, Rosemary!

  4. It had to be said. And you leave it open. Is love in the mourner, in the one who said basta, in both? I always prefer the empathy, sympathy, and have ceased calling those critics, but ... in some ways, after a while, one of them actually helped.

  5. This is so very passion filled, Rosemary and yes it makes me wonder whether we only get one chance? xo

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  6. A different response Rosemary. I don't believe in soul mates but I do believe in making it work, smiles!

  7. True, Rosemary,

At a crucial time in my life, my mother told me one can love more than one person deeply in life...it helped me move on. I don't know why I never thought of something so obvious on my own.

    1. Because we are conditioned by fairy stories, novels, movies....

  8. A fine poem. I like it very much. When you tell someone something that is true and they don't or can't or won't hear it.
