They cry, ‘Here comes the cold!’
those Northern Hemispherists – bold
to ignore the other half of the world.
(Sigh!) That’s getting old.
Here, the cold is leaving. How sweet
to contemplate the return of heat.
Never mind what excesses we may meet
as we globally warm – still a treat.
Here in the sub-tropics, anyway, cold
is fleeting and slight. We find it sweet
that our winters are meek and bland, not bold
and harsh. We welcome the caress of heat.
Cold north, warm south; the twain don’t meet,
can’t cross from opposite sides of the world.
Never mind change or seasons, that much is old.
And perhaps we may count it a treat.
More and more I love home, as I get old.
When I was younger I travelled the world
and sampled other climates. Oh, I was bold!
Now – in all weathers, home keeps out the cold.
Written for 'Here Comes the Cold' at Poems of Garden Gnomes
I attempted a ‘Martin verse’, invented by Martin Kloess. Not easy!

You did well with the form, Rosemary.,i agree, home is best. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteI really love this poem. My home is San Francisco.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you approve. (Told you I'd try it!)
DeleteNice to appreciate one's familiar weather / climate! I often think as well that I am (for the most part) happy with the weather/climate where I live. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteI so agree, "more and more, i love home, as i get old." My place is always nest and sanctuary, my retreat.
ReplyDeleteThe first verse made me smile.. I found myself writing several monsoon related poems as I was swamped by beach and lemonade visuals from the west while it just wouldn't stop raining here!
ReplyDeleteThis is the wonderful part of blogging. We have to try to sense the spring in fall or monsoon in drought. But I think that in the end home is best too.
ReplyDeleteI must admit to believing that home is best...
ReplyDeleteEast west home always best ;)
ReplyDeleteAh yes.. here is simply no place like home💕 Beautiful work on the form Rosemary!💕
ReplyDeleteHeart is where home is:) the opposite of the syaing, suits perfectly!
ReplyDeleteI love your enthusiasm for the arriving of heat to your location. And I am also enthused about the cold coming here although I hope it won't snow so much this year. Good day Rosemary!
ReplyDeleteGood day to you! My enthusiasm is somewhat tempered as I look at the weather forecast for the coming week – EXCEEDINGLY high temperatures for days in a row, and it's officially only Spring. Climate change is no myth! I still prefer heat; can't handle the cold – but....
DeleteThe final five words of your poem warm my heart: "home keeps out the cold." Oh, yes!
ReplyDeleteYes and this five words work so well on so many different levels Rosemary- great theme for a Sunday especially...
ReplyDeleteLol...my first reading of this was that it was a Martian Form....maybe I need more sleep? Loved the poem.
ReplyDeleteI like your rhyme scheme here and a most enjoyable read
ReplyDeleteThank you. It's Martin's rhyme scheme really – and quite hard to fit into, I found.
DeleteIn each place and each life there is a season. Fall arrived on the calendar, but summer is lingering it will hit 90 today. A wonderful bit of summer to brighten my day!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time of spring renewal Rosemary!
The weather outside doesn't matter when home is where the heart is!
ReplyDeleteMy best friend I've never met lives in Perth, Australia. Despite the fact her winter is my summer, her morning my night, we have maintained constant contact for many years, after meeting on a pen pal web site. I loved this poem, Rosemary!
ReplyDeleteHome is the best! Lovely capture.
ReplyDeleteGood job with the Martin verse you introduced me to another form. I loved your poem playful and true.
ReplyDeleteYes our winter is coming and oh it is surely a white, cold, frozen winter....I find it odd that winter does not get like this in the southern half of the world....home is best in winter for me as it is cozy. But I am stretching my wings as I age and hope to fly soon and see more of the world.
ReplyDeleteHaha...yup! That was a very nice read for me.

It can never be too hot for me. Hate cold. If I could avoid ever living through another winter I would.
ReplyDeleteLovely, lilting and philosophical, to boot. Be it ever so humble ... there really IS no place like home.
ReplyDeleteWe enter my favorite seasons, autumn and winter....
ReplyDeleteAutumn is my favourite too – we have beautiful weather in autumn – but winter is my least favourite. I know many people do enjoy winter; I have never been able to understand why!
