I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

My Living Room

It is full
of coloured clowns:
puppets on swings.

They hang from
ceilings and sills,
perch on ledges.

Some visitors shudder,
but to me
they are gorgeous.

And more colour –
paintings and photos
on every wall.

I arrange them
by matching tonings
rather than styles.

(Mine, you see,
are eclectic tastes.
I have fun.)

And the ornaments –
elephants and angels,
crystals and shells.

There are vases
and bottles full
of gathered feathers.

There are offerings
for the faeries
(the nature spirits).

On the bookshelf
sits a cat:
of plaster, black.

By the door
a live cat
rests, also black.

This living room
is of course
a witch’s lair.

(In this case the room IS the view.)

P.S. Colleen asks, in the comments, 'What, no brooms?' Of course there are brooms, one at each outside door:

  1. You have a most interesting room, Rosemary; and I sense that you could write a poem about many of the objects I see in the photos. I especially like the blue clown on the string....and, of course, your new cat! Smiles. Your room tells a lot about you, Rosemary!

  2. What a wonderful, unique room, Rosemary! You must be very happy when you sit there, which I assume is a great deal of time.

  3. Of course it's a witches lair...they always have a black cat or two. I love the mixture of magical and fanciful in your space, Rosemary. It brings a smile to my face.

  6. I'm afraid I'm one who finds clowns scary. Otherwise your room is full of color and energy, just as I picture you.

  7. What no brooms? I like a room with a swing in it. Clowns, not so sure.

  8. I love those mirrored cats. :) I am one who does NOT like clowns, though. ;)

  9. I LOVE getting to see your room. Mine is similar - full of wildlife pictures on every wall, feathers, rocks, crystals, window hung with prisms for indoor rainbows...........I loved having a look at yours - so alive! Love your cat too and am happy she settled in.

  10. The colors give your room a happy feel, Rosemary. For me, it's important that my space be who I am, not always what the current trends demand. But of course, when you share space as I do, there are always compromises.
