I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

Coral Loss

More than one-third of coral reefs
died in the huge bleaching.
We were all caught by surprise.

The previous monster
lifted background temperatures.

We were all caught by surprise.

Warm seas. Corals expel
tiny photosynthetic algae,
turn white and die.

We were all
caught by surprise.

Future El Ninos push beyond
thresholds – including
the Great Barrier Reef
and Kakadu.

Banks consider climate.

We were all caught
by surprise.

  3. I'm sometimes astonished (and annoyed) by societal blindness. We tend to not see things until their killing effects are just moments from ending our lives. Makes no sense. And it makes me sad.

On a crafty note, love your blackout poem! You captured the essence of the article and made it look easy. Wonderful.

  4. Yes, everyone is caught by surprise, though scientists have been warning of this for decades. I am distressed about the coral reef. I love what you turned the article into - a very wonderful poem!
