I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

A New World?

Kyrielle for 22 December 2012

This is the way the world begins.
Wake and breathe: a normal day.
We are not punished for our sins —
not just this moment anyway.

It might be safe to buy more food
and even stash a bit away
now that the world's not going to end —
well, not this moment anyway.

But can we now begin again?
Pollution hasn't gone away.
Carbon emissions still remain —
for this long moment anyway.

We cry out to whatever God:
'Now please deliver us!' we pray.
'In the beginning is the word —
Oh grant a new one, any way!'

My father, the agnostic, said:
'Do your own deeds, say your own say.
Each of us, thus, could save the world —
for one more moment, anyway.'

Redressing the collective sins,
we each must act on our dismay.
Is now when our new world begins?
Let's seize this moment anyway!

  1. Very, very nice. Great variation on the refrain.
Deep thoughts -- pessimistic and hopeful both.
    Agnostic and pragmatic.
    I like your Dad!

  2. nice...well done...what do we do now...the world did not end, and yet we find ourselves faced with many challenges as well...your fathers thoughts are intriguing and cool how you were able to work them in as well...def lets sieze the moment...very nice turn of the form...

  3. Very creative phrasing of the refraining line ~

Maybe now we can begin anew, seize each moment ~

  4. Beautiful! Love the carpe diem spirit and the tongue-in-cheek type tone you set from the moment the refrain struck :)

  5. Beautiful - I agree..taking on the world in such a creative way. I especially liked the way you used your refrain. It was very effective. Thank you so much. Wishing you a wonderful holiday.

  6. oh this is wonderful...such great flow, so creative and unforced rhymes...like it much...and yeah...Let's seize this moment anyway!...and let each of us do our 5 cents to make this world a better place..

  7. Dear Passionate Crone, I do heartily believe it's all in this moment, and always is. We may not be able to control a lot of things but we can create any reality we want. Thanks for the reminder! xo

  8. Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. I went away for a few days and had no access, so I'm just seeing and enjoying them now.

  9. I love this, Rosemary. Every day is a new day. Every day offers us the opportunity to begin anew and live in the Now. Lovely.
