Verse Portrait 30. Surrogate Daughter
you walked past my market stall.
Mid-psychic reading I looked up,
caught your penetrating eye.
Returning when I was free,
you told me you’d seen how true
was my link to the Universe.
“You’ve chosen this work,” you said.
“And deserve your pay.”
Adopting me, you switched off
your own brilliant, burdensome gift,
preferring to cook for people
or give the homeless a bed.
